Career Change Series - Tip 1 - Write Your Own Job Description and Your Dream Employers

I have had a number of really interesting jobs over the past 10 years. They have been in highly sought after industries, often roles I hadn't done previously and each role has included a substantial pay increase.

As a result I often have people asking me "but how the hell did you do it"?? So I decided it was time to divulge some of my secrets.

The information provided is a summary of the advice I provide when conducting career transition coaching and I am going to assume you know what you want to do you just don't know how to get there.

It is important to treat changing your career and job search like you were buying a new house. With such a sizable purchase you wouldn't just purchase the first house you saw would you?

No, I'd suggest that you would come up with a list of must-have's such as number of bedrooms, suburb location, price range, style of house and many other requirements.

In my opinion career change and job search activities should be undertaken in a very similar way only you are coming up with your list of interests, values and job conditions and matching these with potential employers and industries.

For example, I studied International Studies at university. Upon graduating I knew that I wanted a job where I could travel internationally, learn about new cultures, be involved in social enterprises such as reducing poverty, improving the status of women or improving essential services such as health & education. Salary and job location were not important to me at this stage of my career - I just needed experience.

Positions in this area are highly sought after especially at entry level. So rather than just hoping something would be advertised on Seek.com, I brainstormed and researched what my employment options were:

• AusAID -Australian Government Department that manages the Aid Program

• DFAT - Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade where I could work as an international diplomat

• Managing Contractors - Companies such as Coffey International Development which manage and implement specific projects and programs on behalf of AusAID

• NGO's - Non-Governmental Organisations such as World Bank, World Vision, Medicine Sans Frontiers, UNICEF

• Volunteer Programs -to gain experience working on aid projects such those provided by Australian Volunteers International and Austraining that could lead to permanent paid employment.

I then researched how to gain employment in this area such as:

• Applying for jobs directly through the AusAID, DFAT & Coffey International Development websites

• Accessing Industry specific job boards such as Devnet and Devex; and

• Applying for volunteer programs

• Applying for Internships at major world organisations such as UNICEF

I gained a career in International Development with no previous experience using a mixture of direct contact and applying for advertised jobs on these department or company websites. Through roles with AusAID & Coffey International Development I travelled to Banda Aceh to assist with post-tsunami reconstruction and to Jakarta, Manila and Nadi to train and mentor staff.

So this week think about what you would really love to do by coming up with your own position description like I did. Next, brainstorm which companies, industries, government departments, NGO's or small businesses could offer such opportunities. Once you have identified potential employer's research how people go about getting jobs with these entities beyond merely responding to jobs advertised on seek.com.

What did you think of this tip? I'd love to know so post a comment below!
